The Early Beginnings
The Rycroft Agricultural Society traces its origins back to 1912, when it was first established as the Spirit River Agricultural Society. Originally located in the Spirit River Settlement, the Society was created to support local agricultural initiatives and provide a venue for community fairs and events. In its early days, land was set aside by the Dominion of Canada to support these activities, marking the beginning of its enduring legacy.
A Strategic Move Near the Rail Line
As the rail line was established north of the settlement, residents made the significant decision to relocate closer to the tracks. This move ultimately led to the establishment of both the present-day communities of Rycroft and Spirit River. The Agricultural Society played a pivotal role in supporting these transitions, ensuring that community and agricultural needs were met.
Establishing a Permanent Home
In November 1928, the Agricultural Society partnered with the Rycroft Sports Association to purchase a permanent site on RG 39, Twp 78, RR5, W6. This 22.5-acre property included a two-story hall and has remained the Society’s home ever since. Over the years, this location has hosted countless events and served as a focal point for the community.
Overcoming Adversity
The Rycroft Agricultural Society has faced its share of challenges. In 1933, the original hall burned down, leaving the community without a central gathering space. Undeterred, the Society rebuilt the hall in 1934, complete with a projector room added in 1944 for screening popular films such as Gone with the Wind. This new space became a hub for social and cultural events, bringing the community closer together.
Unfortunately, disaster struck again in 1952 when the hall burned down a second time. While the curling rink that had been established nearby remained intact for decades, it was eventually dismantled in 1981 due to the widening of Highway 49.
A New Charter and Renewed Vision
The 1970s brought a new era of growth and opportunity.
Modern-Day Contributions

From organizing local fairs and cultural events to supporting agricultural education and development, the Society remains a cornerstone of life in Rycroft. Its facilities continue to serve as a gathering place for celebrations, meetings, and other events that bring people together.
